Gerald Holtom designed this symbol in 1958 to symbolize a call for nuclear disarmament by combining the characters "N" and "D" from flag semaphore. Since those origins in the nuclear disarmament movement, the symbol has come to embody a sweeping call for peace and justice throughout the world.
